There are many, many awesome things to do on a Canadian Rockies vacation, and whether you go to Banff or Jasper, Canmore or Golden, Alberta or British Columbia, you’ll find lots great golf courses in the rockies.

The Greywolf Golf Course, plays well and looks great.

Golf here isn’t just for hardcore golfers. If you’ve got some friends who are going out for a round, you might want to tag along, even if it isn’t your favorite sport. The courses here are stunningly beautiful, and put you right in the heart of some of the Rockies most spectacular beauty.

Eagle Ranch Golf and Country Club

At Eagle Ranch, the views are spectacular. Designed by golf course architect, William G. Robertson, the 72 golf course was created to harmonize with the rocks, ravines, canyons, bluffs, and grassy expanses.

Situated in the Invermere Valley in British Columbia, Eagle Ranch Golf and Country Club Resort is an 18-hole, championship 6,600 yard course that includes full practice facilities. With terrain that follows the natural contours of the area, this 6,800 course features multiple tee boxes on every hole, providing players of all skill levels to thoroughly enjoy the course. With four to five tee box choices, golfers can choose the right box according to their level of expertise, whether it is farther back for the low handicapper or forward for the high handicapper.

Unprecedented in its ability to conform to the complexities of canyon territory, golfers can watch each golf ball arc against a ‘movie-set’ 360-degree panorama of the Rocky and Purcell Mountain ranges. And besides the amazing setting, Eagle Ranch Golf and Country Club Resort is located in what is known as the “sunbelt” of the Canadian Rockies. Here the temperatures are milder than in other Canadian Rocky areas, allowing the golfing season to start earlier than in most of British Columbia.

Take private or group lessons with Eagle Ranch’s golf pros to improve your game. You can schedule classes easily at the pro shop where you can also purchase any of your golfing needs. Eagle Ranch Golf and Country Club Resort is a soft-spike facility, so please remember to wear non-metal spiked golfing shoes or soft sole shoes. Spike replacement can be made at the Golf Shop for $15.

Greywolf Golf Course

With its huge granite outcroppings combined with lush fairways, rambling creeks, and magnificent greens, Greywolf Golf Course is considered one of the best new courses in Canada for the way it blends into the environment. Created by the brilliant golf course architect, Doug Carrick, this Canadian Rocky vacation destination is not to be missed.

Greywolf was voted Best New Golf Resort in Western Canada for 1999 by Canada’s Golf Ranking Magazine. With its 7,140 yards, Greywolf Golf Course is one of the most beautiful courses in the Canadian Rockies.

Wildlife viewing at Gray Wolf is another plus. Deer, black bears, and moose are some of the animals that live in the area, so be sure to have your camera close at hand.

Kananaskis Country Golf Course

With mountains rising 9,600 feet above sea level, the courses at Kananaskis Country Golf Course ascend to almost 5,000 feet. The two world-class courses ranging from 5,539 to 7,083 yards are named for the magnificent limestone peaks that hover over them: Mount Kidd and Mount Lourette. On both 18-hole courses you will find glacier-fed ponds and creeks, a plethora of wildlife, evergreen forests, and the cascading Kananaskis River, in addition to over 140 silica sand bunkers and four sets of tee boxes. Robert Trent Jones’ trademark sand traps, undulating greens, and use of water combine with high mountain elevation to create a test of true skill for the low handicap player. With its natural terrain there is plenty of bunkering and water play, creating the perfect environment for a challenging game.

Less than an hour’s drive from Banff or Calgary, this classic golf resort is right in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. Designed in the early 1980s by Robert Trent Jones Sr., Kananaskis Country Golf Course has been rated the “best in Western Canada” by Golf Digest, with 4 ½ stars awarded in tribute to its excellence in both service and value.

Kananaskis Country Golf Course has a great pro shop featuring all the best known brands in golfing gear, along with an excellent restaurant, fireside lounge, patios with amazing views, valet parking, and a locker room area, you would be hard-pressed to find a better spot to perfect your game. And for the non-golfers among you, this Canadian Rockies vacation destination provides excellent hiking trails along with many high-quality lodges and luxury accommodations nearby.

Guests at the Kananaskis Country Golf Course are free to use the complimentary valet parking, locker room, and shower facilities.

Nestled in the valley floor of the Majestic Canadian Rockies is my home course, The Canmore Golf and Curling Club. It is a truly spectacular course! No matter how many times I play during the season, I never tire of its beauty or its challenges. Standing on number one, par 5 tee box looks innocent enough.  The fairway is wide and inviting. Take out your driver and give it a mighty swing. However, you will need to think carefully on what to do with your second shot. If you have the power and try to reach the green in two, beware of the tricky pot bunker in front. Going long is dangerous as well. Deep, hungry, native fescue and evergreen trees will swallow up your ball, never to be found again. A wiser choice is to lay up and approach the green with a lofted iron.

The second hole is very tricky. This par 3 has seen huge numbers from even the best golfers around.  When you are standing on the tee, your heart will most likely start beating a little faster, especially if the pin is tucked in the bottom left corner. There is a large and beautiful water feature that you must carry, there are 2 bunkers on either side and dense forest behind the green. The slope on the green is very significant. Therefore, putting from above the hole posses an entire new set of challenges. Skip with joy to the next hole if you finish with a par.

Hole number 3 is a long par 4, with out of bounds all along the right side and strategically placed trees along the left side. Fairway is key from the tee!!! Don’t get caught admiring the magnificent view of the Rundle Range or Cascade Mountain in the far distance. Your second shot takes concentration as the green is guarded by 3 large bunkers that seem to draw your ball in. Although there are dramatic breaks on the green, it is fairly straightforward to read.
